While the economy continues to suffer in early 2009, one industry that has seen growth and prosperity is skin care. There are a number of contributing factors for this. The least of which is that the public at large is still concerned about its appearance and has very little interest in giving way to the aging process.

Todays skin care professionals, also known as estheticians, are provided with a variety of career options in a great number of different work environments. This includes traditional salons and spas, as well as medical spas or even medical offices. The field of esthetics is centuries old, often tracing its origins to Europe and Egyptian cultures. In fact, one of the most renowned international societies for esthetics is CIDESCO, which is based in Europe.

Traditional skin care typically includes facials, exfoliation, & treatments designed to improve not only the appearance of skin, but also its health. Improving circulation and repairing the effects of sun exposure are a few of the challenges that face modern estheticians.

As technology has advanced, so too have the set of tools and resources that have been placed at the disposal of the skin care professional. Today it is common for an esthetician to participate in additional training to learn how to appropriately implement technologies such as lasers and other medically based technologies into their repertoire. Laser and other energy based devices, which include equipment that utilizes ultrasound, radio frequency energy, light emission diodes, endermology, and intense pulsed light, can

be used for a myriad of applications.

Among the most popular of these newer services are laser hair removal, laser tattoo reduction, spider vein removal, sun damage repair, the ability to tighten and contour lax skin on the face, neck, and body, and even targeted cellulite reduction. All of these services are ideally suited to be placed in the hands of our skin care experts, as they no longer involve cutting, fluid exchange, or anesthesia. They are all non-invasive therapies that can be performed over the course of a lunch break will no ill after effects.

A career in the skin care industry can be quite lucrative as well. Estheticians may choose to work on a cruise ship or assist a plastic surgeon. No matter what career path they choose, a skin care professional will possess a unique and valuable skill set that can demand anywhere from $20 to $1,000 per hour for their services.

Where would you start if you were an aspiring skin care professional? Step one is identifying a leading esthetician school that provides a focus and expertise in the specific area of study that you wish to pursue. Step two would be to consult any number of resources designed to bring together job seekers and potential employers, such as an online job board.

Opportunities are abound in a career that can be both fun and rewarding. The chance to help people look better and, ultimately, feel better is a wonderful pursuit. You too can help in the battle against aging!
