The top MBA programs in the country are looking for a lot more than just good grades. Sure, grades are important, in fact, exceptionally good grades are a prerequisite. But every serious candidate before the selection committee is going to have good grades. So how do you distinguish yourself from the sea of other applicants?

The MBA letter of recommendation is the perfect opportunity to set your application apart from the rest. It is a place to have someone else brag on you, so you can highlight your best qualities without coming off as conceited. MBA admissions boards search for students with superior leadership skills and team working abilities. Your letters will give them a third party perspective on your leadership abilities from someone who has seen it first hand and that account will be more valuable to the selection committee than anything you can say about yourself.

A lot hangs in the balance with an MBA letter of recommendation. A good one can provide a huge boost for your application, while a poorly written one can actually be a negative. The opinion that the MBA application committee develops about the about the abilities of your recommender reflects on you just as much as what they say about you. So make sure you choose wisely. You want your MBA recommendation to be more than just complementary. It must first be well written to be taken seriously. And it must be filled with specific examples that let the committee

know about your talents.

The people you select to write your recommendations are going to have to spend at least an hour if not more to come up with a well written letter that will be an asset to your application. Make sure that you pick someone who will have the time to do a proper job. Make sure, of course that they are also someone who knows your work. If possible, take the person out to lunch of for coffee so that you can discuss where the recommendation fits into your overall application package. Make sure to ask if they have time to do this for you. You do not want to have to hound them as deadlines approach, or have them rush through just to get it done.

Be sure to make your requests at least three months before your deadline. That way you will be able to offer multiple friendly reminders without seeming pushy. Because the last thing you want to do is irritate the person who is supposed to be saying superbly nice things about you. If all goes well, you will end up with an MBA letter of recommendation that is an asset to your application package. Make sure you remember to thank the people who took the time to write recommendations for you. Another lunch or cup of coffee will still be a cheap investment in the detail that might just turn out to be the deciding factor in your application process.
