Moving house is considered to be one of the most stressful things we can do, often ranking just below divorce in surveys. It's surprising that so many of us insist on moving as regularly as we do: most British people move every few years on average, probably contributing to many more grey hairs than we would like. I recently moved, and I found a great way to eliminate some of the stress from getting into my new home in Guildford - storage.
One of the hardest things I've found about moving has been getting all my things into the house or flat while they're boxed up, especially when you have lots of boxes and keep forgetting to write what's in them, like I do. Unpacking while still surrounded by boxes can be very disheartening since you just don't seem to be getting anywhere, but hiring a unit for storage in Guildford a week or so before I moved there really helped me cut down on this.
In stark contrast to other times I've moved, this time I was determined to be regimented about it. This wasn't going to be the usual chaotic experience; this was going to be a precision operation. As
I was packing, I separated my belongings into two sets of boxes: essential and non-essential. Essentials were the possessions I thought I would need within the first couple of days of being in my new home and they would come to the house with me. If I wasn't likely to need it straight away, but didn't want to sell it or throw it away, it went in the non-essential boxes which were loaded into the van and driven up to my Guildford storage unit a few days before the final moving date. I then drove back home to prepare for the final run which was a few days later and considerably lighter than any other time I'd moved.
Moving in with fewer boxes than I would normally take really helped me make the move easier and less stressful. Even unpacking went better - without as many boxes to work through, there was a real sense of progress and with constant access to my storage in Guildford, it was never difficult to get to my other boxes to unpack them. With the reasonable prices being offered from numerous storage companies, it's easier and cheaper than ever to move house with less stress.
