Britain's not known for its pleasant weather, but some places can still get a lot warmer than we'd like - my workspace for example. I recently started my own video production business; I'm mostly providing work for local bands, filming and editing their promotional videos and sometimes backstage pieces for their websites or general release and my 'office' has been hired on a seriously low budget - it's a big room at a self storage company.
This saves a great deal on costs and I know all my equipment will be completely secure in the evening, spending eight or nine hours a day in a room with no windows, especially with all the computers and other equipment, can get quite warm.
The business isn't really making enough just yet for me to hire a proper office and I just don't have the space to work at home, so it looks like the storage unit is going to be staying for the time being, but I had to find some way to keep the room cool; excessive heat is bad for the computers and a lot of the media I keep there and with summer coming up, I started looking into buying or hiring an air conditioner.
It
turns out that there are quite a few options when acquiring an air conditioner; floor mounted, roof or wall mounted, cassette style were just a few of them. Due to where it was going, having a piece taken out of the wall for ducting wasn't an option, so I chose the floor mounted style. It works much like a regular air conditioner but doesn't need to be attached to any ducting so it could be safely used in my storage unit without upsetting the owners anymore than I already was by practically living in one of their units.
The hiring fee wasn't too high - it was certainly cheaper than renting office space or moving to a larger home and having my work space air conditioned has really helped with keeping me productive and my equipment safe and cool.
Though working in a storage unit is far from ideal, especially when prospective clients ask to take a tour of my offices, having an air conditioner in there has proved to be vital during the warm summer months, saving my equipment, my media and myself. Hopefully I'll have moved to a proper office by next summer but if not, I can definitely see myself hiring another air conditioning unit.
