If you're determined to light your cigar with matches, rather than using butane lighters or other sources of flame, there are a few key steps to follow. Using matches can be more than enjoyable, but if done incorrectly, can ruin the flavor of your cigar. True cigar purists do not use matches or lighters, but use wooden strips (usually cedar), though these can be difficult to transport outside the home. Therefore, many people have turned to matches to take the place of lighters or cedar strips. How do you use them?

Before you discard the idea of butane lighters or other fire sources, make sure that you can get your hands on wooden matches. The cardboard type will simply not work well. You need several key components in a match to have an enjoyable experience. First, it must be made of wood. Second, it must be long enough for the job. How do you know how long is long enough? Why can you not use cardboard matches to fire up that cigar? Actually, using cardboard matches will probably burn your fingers, or provide an uneven light for your smoke, which can ruin the entire cigar quickly.

Wooden matches must be long enough

that you can light your cigar slowly, without fear of burning your fingers. In addition, once you light your match, you must allow the sulfur head to burn away, or you'll find that your cigar tastes distinctly match-like, which is not a good prospect. Unlike traditional lighters and other butane lighters, sulfur matches will taint that cigar with an unpleasant taste. Therefore, your first step in smoking is to cut the cigar properly, followed by the correct lighting method. With wooden matches, you'll need to be efficient, but take your time.

First, and this works with butane lighters as well, you'll need to roll the cigar in between your fingers over the flame. Do not let the flame touch it; you are simply toasting the cigar and wrapper with heat. Once it has warmed and begun to darken a bit, place the cigar in your mouth and rotate it with your fingers. Apply the flame to the foot of the cigar and draw on the cigar while turning it. Once it is completely lit, take it out of your mouth and inspect the end to ensure that the cigar is burning evenly. If so, then you can relax with your smoke of choice.
