To anyone who is taking up golf the act of holding a golf club looks pretty easy but a proper golf grip is actually the most fundamental part of actually playing the game.
The grip is the only part of your body that is in contact with the club and directly influences what the club will do and how it will do it.This sounds all fairly obvious but a poor grip will create many problems that you may not readily associate with it.
To illustrate this point let us consider the two most common faults that appear with regularity, namely the hook shot and the ever so common slice. Have you considered that your grip may be the cause of either of these frustrating problems?
The hook shot is where the ball will fly down the fairway and then turn left into the rubbish, the slice as I am sure the vast majority of golfers will know is the opposite. The ball will go from left to right seemingly on purpose, this is by far and away the most common fault.
There are endless swing tips, golf books, Internet pages and television programs devoted to just this one fault and yet many golfers are still left in the dark
as to how their improper golf grip is causing this one fault.
Even experienced golfers may not realize that their grip is at the heart of their problem and will try everything to solve the slice or hook from adjusting the ball position, width of their stance and doing funny things with their legs.
Professional golfers on tour will usually spend a lot of time going over their grip to make sure that any little faults are eliminated. They know that a bad gripping technique can seriously affect their scoring chances. If the pros have to do it, then shouldn't we all being doing the same?
By going back to the basics and developing a really good golf grip many problems can be overcome. As a golfer it is necessary to go back to the beginning every now and then to get rid of the little bad habits that we all slowly get into, a poor golf grip is one of them.
Before you go out to play your next round of golf spend some time just practicing how to grip a golf club, pay attention to your hands and their relationship to the club face, also take notice of how tightly or otherwise you are gripping the shaft.
