Till around a few months ago everyone had nothing but praises for soybeans and soy milk. But it looks like things are turning around for this miracle food that came as a blessing for vegans all over. In fact it seems now that soybeans or soy milk can be a man's worst night mare!
Gynecomastia
In a recent survey, it was found that soy might decrease a man's testosterone production and increase his estradiol production. Increased estradiol can in turn lead to an associated increase in female hormone production. A recent study on a patient has also implied that the increased intake of soy proteins can lead to gynecomastia. Gynecomastia is the development of breasts for men and they are often both painful and embarrassing.
Reduced Sperm count
According to a Harvard study submitted by Jorge E. Chavarro, M.D., Sc.D, and his colleagues there is a strong association between consumption of soy foods and decreased sperm count in men! In this study the soy intake of 99 men were recorded and then a semen analysis was conducted on each of them. It was found that those who took the most amount of soy protein produced 32 percent fewer sperm per milliliter of ejaculate than those
who went without soy. I don't think the men will be looking at soy favorably anymore.
Erectile Dysfunction
Studies established in the Journal of Andrology and Urology respectively also implied that experiments on male rats show that an increased in take of soy proteins can lead to less testosterone production, biochemical changes to their penile tissue and erectile dysfunction!! Though they do say that the results need not be the same for rats and humans, they site as proof the 10 percent higher incidence of erectile dysfunction in Chinese men who consume a lot of soy based food products.
Recently even the practice of feeding soy milk formula for babies have been questioned and connected to increased asthma and allergy reactions for these children when they become adults. Countries like Israel joined France, New Zealand, and Australia have taken decisions to try and avoid soy milk completely for the infant's diet! Doctors claim that it can all be traced back to the tendency to take too much of a good thing. In this case soy proteins! Wouldn't you say that this is a little scary!! The best solution would be, as always a balanced diet. Hope the men out there are warned enough!
