Kitchen re-modeling can be a very expensive job. I know that every time my partner mentions that it is about time that we re-modeled our kitchen I get shivers down my spine. But it does not have to be that way. There are so many little touches that you can make to a kitchen now that do not have to cost a small fortune and are extremely easy to execute that it is almost feasible to change the complete look of your kitchen every couple of years with very little fuss.
As we all know “god is in the detail”, this is worth bearing in mind when it comes to re-modeling any room and the kitchen is no exception. Making a grand sweeping statement by totally ripping out a perfectly good but old kitchen is very noble but also very silly and totally unnecessary. Some very minor changes in your kitchen can make a very big difference to the overall appearance and feel of the room.
Before you start hammering away at your old kitchen it is worthwhile sitting down and thinking about what exactly it is that you want to achieve from re-modeling. If you are happy with the location of all of the cupboards and units then it would be a strange foolish thing to move them about just for the sake of it, likewise if you decide that you are unhappy with the positioning of certain items in the room then the job may be a larger one than anticipated.
Changing the whole kitchen around or even renewing it just because you have gone off the color scheme is another foolish mistake. Today we have so many options open to us that changing a whole kitchen because it may not be the color that we now like or even the fact that it no longer looks fashionable is nonsense. A kitchen is nothing more than cupboards, units, appliances, sink and a worktop. All of
these can be updated relatively cheaply and with the minimum of fuss as well as giving the maximum amount newness that you desire. Cupboard and unit doors can be replaced extremely cheaply and can turn an old shabby kitchen into something very glamorous that will stand the test of time for as long as you need it to.
Changing the appliances within your kitchen is likely to create very little in the way of aesthetic improvement and is more likely to be of a practical or functional requirement to you and your family. But changing your worktops can make a real improvement to a kitchen.
The good thing about changing the worktops is that they not only look good bet they do serve a functional purpose as well. If your kitchen currently has tatty old scratched worktops these are probably harboring all kinds of bacteria which can breed in the scratches and grooves that are worn into the surface. A good way to alleviate this problem is to replace old wooden worktops with new ceramic, stone or granite worktops. These will stay totally scratch free if used and looked after in the correct way and should remain in pristine condition for many years to come.
For many years the price of granite worktops has been out of the reach of many people’s budget but today with the opening up of Far East trade routes these are now becoming much more affordable. If you find a supplier and fitter in your local area you can have your granite worktop cut to your exact specifications, including having a draining board carved into it, for a relatively affordable amount of money.
So next time your partner sits you down and explains to you that they think that you should have a new kitchen just let them finish and then give them your ideas for a new kitchen. I guarantee your option will be at least as good and much cheaper.
