Do you know of a person or even a family member that has a hearing loss? Is so you may know of the problems and frusterations that can come up if the hearing loss is not corrected.

My husband started losing his hearing about 25 years ago. We spent years telling him he was not hearing as well as he used to. That deteriorated to "You are going deaf. Do something about it." From there, it got even worse. We had a 5 year old child at the time and she was growing up thinking that communication required yelling at each other. It was bad enough that our daughter already knew that if she needed her daddy, she had to call him by name. He couldn't hear her holler "daddy."

When the hearing got so bad that it was causing dangerous problems at his work, he finally went for a hearing test. It wasn't until after the machine told him he had a hearing problem that he was willing to look into the options available to him. He started with a standard in the ear hearing aid. Since that time, he has had several more hearing aids. He is wearing digitals now. They were rather expensive, but I will tell you, they are

worth every penny spent on them and the time it took to get used to them.

I truly believe that we would not have been married today without those hearing aids. We spent too much time arguing because I yelled so that he could hear me. In turn, he reacted defensively, which made me also react defensively. He has been wearing aids for almost 20 years now. It does take time to get used to them. It isn't at all like having your hearing back. There are several things that still bother him about them, including the way they feed sound. But they allow you to hear better than you can without one, and that is the most important thing.

My advice to anyone trying to convince someone to have their hearing tested and maybe use a hearing aid is to find a person who uses the aids. Ask them for honest answers to any questions you or the hearing impaired person might have. Then make sure the things fit properly. Something we weren't told was that hearing aids aren't supposed to make noise. If they do, they don't fit properly. A simple fit adjustment was all that was needed. Also, have the aids made to fit you. Ordering a one-size-fits-all rarely works.
