Honda has topped Warranty Direct's used car reliability survey recorded over the past 12 months.
Used Honda vehicles have only a 10.59 per cent chance of breaking down according to the insurance specialist's survey, finishing way ahead of second-placed Mazda with 13.03 per cent. The survey covered 250 of the most popular cars, between three and six years old from 30 car manufacturing companies.
If you compare the statistics, a used Honda's 10 per cent chance of breakdown looks even more impressive when compared to the likes of Renault and Saab who find themselves at the wrong end of the table - and especially Land Rover who recorded a 47 per cent chance of breaking down.
This is great news for the Honda factory plant in Swindon who have come through a turbulent past 12 months having endured a four month closure and a pay cut in order to safeguard jobs after reducing its workforce from 4,700 to 3,700. Because of these rife conditions the Wiltshire based factory has seen a reduction in its yearly production slashed by half. The economic downturn and recession hit the car industry harder than most - as purse strings were tightened fewer people were obviously buying less cars.
The used car industry has also
been affected as less people are changing their cars meaning that less cars are being traded, and also due to the Government Scrappage Scheme that has seen more than 100,000 cars that could have been put back onto the used car market being scrapped in return for a 2,000 pounds discount off the on the road price of a brand new car.
An interesting fact about the Japanese car manufacturer is that because so few used Honda's breakdown, the company actually train AA mechanics in how to repair used Honda vehicles simply because they get few chances to repair on them during their day to day work.
Used Honda cars have performed favourably in reliability surveys over the past decade and has now finished in the top three manufacturers for the past four years - an impressive record that suggests the quality of their engineering.
Another point to note is that used Honda cars also recorded favourable results in the price analysis as the ninth least expensive car to repair - the highest placed Japanese manufacturer on the list. Overall it is safe to say that Honda drivers spend less than owners of most other cars and with the economy still settling down, that is vital for today's motorist.
