It is often said that purchasing a car is only second in terms of important financial decisions to buying a home. For some, this may not be the case. However, for the majority of people, it is largely true as the wrong choice of car can be extremely costly.
One of the main problems with buying a car is the hefty repair bills that often follow after a trip to the garage. To resolve this problem, new cars are purchased as any repairs within a set period of time are generally paid for by the garage who sold the car. However, as with all things, the newer the car, the more expensive it is, which is the reasoning behind why so many people purchase a used car. Whilst the repairs may not be covered, it will be much cheaper initially and allows for anyone, regardless of budget, to have a car out on the open road.
To ensure that a used car lasts for more than a few miles, there are a few simple steps that should be adhered to.
1. If one can, a qualified mechanic should always be taken to view a used car. It may sound obvious to some, but if you have a friend who is a mechanic, or even a friend of a friend, ask if they would join in when going to look at a used car that has already been picked out. Whilst they will not be able to give an in depth history into the car, they will be able to tell
if there are any current mechanical problems. Furthermore, most used car sellers, if the car is as stated in the advert or conversation, will not have a problem with a mechanic checking over the car. However, if the seller refuses, then it is almost guaranteed that the car is not as stated and there will be an obvious underlying mechanical problem.
2. Using the cars VIN, Vehicle Identification Number, potential owners can make a thorough check on the cars history and reveal a range of information, from whether the car has been involved in an accident or if the odometer has been turned back, showing an incorrect mileage amount.
3. By purchasing a used car from a dealer, in particular a reputable one, it will help resolve any problems that may occur in the near future with the car. If a used car is purchased from a private seller, whether they live around the corner or at the other end of the country, if something happens to the car a few days after it is purchased, they are not legally obliged to do anything if they were unaware of the fault. However, most garages offer a short warranty on their used cars, generally three months, meaning peace of mind for the initial period after purchasing the vehicle.
Buying a used car can be a daunting experience, especially for the first time. Fortunately, only a small amount of used car sales turn out negatively so simply follow the above three steps and the used car buying process should be extremely easy and hassle free.
