It is a well known fact amongst car enthusiasts that a BMW 3 series is one of the best used cars that can be bought in todays market. The reasons behind this are extensive and range from their solid build quality right through to their used selling price, which often starts at the very attractive and affordable 5,000 pounds mark. However, as great as they are, if you want to buy a BMW 3 series, or in fact any BMW, that is used, there are several points to note before handing your hard earned cash over.

Unlike a lot of older cars, BMWs are renowned at being able to hide their true mileage. Whilst this may sound like a term for turning back the odometer for some, it is actually a phrase that heaps praise upon the car, as it is regularly said it can be difficult to distinguish between a BMW that has done 30,000 miles and one that has traveled over 130,000.

There are two main reasons behind this cars longevity. Firstly, BMWs are built to last. From the initial chassis building through to the finishing touches on the dashboard, the materials used when creating one of these wonderful machines are always at the top end of the spectrum. Whilst it may give the car a pricier initial cost, it without doubt makes up for it in the lack of wear and tear repairs that are apparent when driving the car for several years.

The second reason behind

the longevity is very simple, owners of BMWs generally love their cars and take great pride in ensuring that they constantly look and perform their best. Whether this means taking the car for a regular service or washing and waxing it every weekend, it makes sure that the car always remains in top condition throughout its life.

For the more fanatical potential BMW owner, one of the things to consider is exactly what series is to be purchased, along with which model. This is because if a set series or model is required, it is best to know the additional extras that were available when the car was new.

For example, if you were looking for a 3 series 330d Touring model, it would be extremely beneficial to know that all models except the base model came with air conditioning and CD players as standard. Therefore, if a dealer is trying to sell a base model at an SE model price, it would be more than appropriate to explain that as it does not have air conditioning or a CD player, the price should be reduced to reflect this.

Whilst BMWs very rarely have anything major wrong with them, especially in terms of mechanical faults, it would not be wise to buy a used model without a full service history. Of course, a large number of car owners do not have their cars serviced regularly, so if a full service history is not available, ensure that this is also reflected in the price.
