How To Sell Cars And Make A Profit

It is a well known fact that outside of this current economical recession, car dealerships are very lucrative businesses. Whether they buy in second hand cars and sell for a respectable profit, or sell a brand new car at the market price after buying it at, in effect, the wholesale cost, there is plenty of money to be made in the buying and selling of cars.

However, it is not just car dealerships who sell cars profitably; many private sellers make a full time living out of trading cars. Although the actual processes may be slightly more complicated, there are there general points that should be followed when deciding to sell cars for a profit.

The very first point that should be taken into consideration is exactly which cars, or at least the type of cars, you are looking to sell. There are hundreds of different cars to choose from, without including the many different variations of each. For example, you may decide you want to sell a Ford Mondeo to begin with. Great. But do you have any preference over whether it is the base, sport, or SE model?

In general, it is not massively important to decide on the exact model of the cars that you are looking to sell. However, it is important to know what type of cars, especially when first starting up, as this has a direct effect on which market you should target and where you should sell your cars.

The second point to note is where to buy the actual

cars from. Obviously, the lower you can buy the cars for, the more profit you can make, assuming the purchase price is a good one. For example, it would not be worthwhile paying 100 pounds for a 1980s Fiat Panda and trying to sell it for 2,000 pounds. It would be worthwhile though if you could get a good deal on a 2003 Citroen Xsara Picasso, such as 1,000 pounds and give it a resale price tag of 3,000 pounds.

Obviously, bargains are not going to be found in other dealerships, as they have their own profits to maintain. Therefore, it is advisable to scour used car magazines, online auction websites, local newspapers and if time permits, a drive around your local area to see if anyone has their car for sale on their drive or outside of their house.

The final point is where to sell the cars and is almost as important as where you buy the cars from. To maximise your profits, you should look to sell your cars somewhere that does not have large overheads, as would be found if you purchased a building and used it as a car dealership. Places such as used car magazines or online, both on auction and classified advert websites, should be tested first.

It has to be noted though that the places where profits would generally be maximised, the buyers are looking for a bargain. Therefore the car may not sell to the value it would have done if on a car dealership forecourt.
