With the exception of the 4x4 and roadster-coupe models, all modern cars that are created by BMW can fit into one of five categories. Whilst each may seem similar to the non-car enthusiast, they are all unique and distinctive in their own right.

Deciding on which series BMW you should choose depends entirely on what you are looking to get from the car. The following information should provide some good standard help when making your initial decision into which series BMW to purchase.

1 Series. Of all current BMW models, excluding the 4x4s, the 1 series is the newest, first hitting the market in 2004. Furthermore, it is also the smallest, seen as the successor to the BMW 3 Series Compact range and most affordable car that BMW have for sale. Available in a range of different styles, the 1 series cars are offered with engines ranging from 1.6 to 3.0 and are available in 2, 3 and 5 door versions.

3 Series. The most popular model across the entire BMW range, the 3 series was first put into production in 1975 and has been constantly produced ever since. Going through five separate generations, the 3 series is a much loved car amongst people of all ages and with all budgets, which is particularly evident in the fact that more BMW 3 series cars were sold in one year than several popular cheaper models, such as the Ford Mondeo.

Depending on which generation of 3 series is chosen, the engine can range from a tidy 1.6 right through to a tremendously powerful 3.0. Coupled with the fact that each generation had a distinct aesthetic overhaul, whilst the 3 series may be a popular range, there are so many different choices, it is impossible to simply say I want a 3 series.

5 Series.

The oldest of the BMW series ranges, the 5 series cars, similar to the 3 series, have gone through five separate generations since their introduction in 1972 and are an extremely comfortable and reliable mid-sized car. An executives dream, the 5 series range comes complete with a range of luxurious added extras and the current fifth generation is available in a range of different specifications, from five separate engine choices and four individual transmission options, including a six-speed manual.

6 Series. This range of BMWs are seen as an evolution of the 5 series and have seen two generations throughout their lifetime. The first run of 6 series cars was in production from 1976 through to 1989 and was available in a 2 door coupe version only.

The second generation of the 6 series range began to be produced in 2006 and is planned to run up to 2012. This version of the 6 series is an extremely luxurious and powerful model, available with engine sizes up to a massive 4.8 litre capacity engine. Furthermore, the 6 series is one of the only modern day mass produced cars that comes with a six speed transmission as standard.

7 Series. First manufactured in 1977, the 7 series BMW has been through five individual generations and is one of the most powerful luxury cars on the market, with the two generations of models produced after 2002 available with a 6.0 litre engine.

Whilst an 8 series range was produced, it was only in production for ten years from 1989 to 1999. Many global factors can be attributed to the disappointing sales of the 8 series range, most prominently the recession in the early part of the 1990s, but there are strong rumours that BMW are to relaunch the 8 series in the coming years.
