Just because we are now in the second half of summer doesn't mean the weather is any less potent. August is right around the corner, and with it comes more sweltering days and humid nights. Heatstroke, sunburns and more are all very real dangers associated with the summer heat, but don't let that scare you into hiding indoors in the A/C for the next month and a half. Using patio umbrellas, accessories and some good old common sense will make hanging out outdoors fun and safe for all.
Patio Umbrellas
In summer, the most important to thing to have in your backyard, by the pool or out on the deck are patio umbrellas. The reasons are obvious. Patio umbrellas block harmful UV rays from your skin and protect you from radiation that could lead to skin cancer. Also, the shade provided will keep the area under the umbrella notably cooler than surrounding areas. This in turn will keep your core temperature cooler and less at risk of overheating.
Accessories
There are a multitude of gadgets associated with beating the summer heat. Paired with patio umbrellas, you can be cool and comfy in no time. But how do you choose which products are best? Most of it comes down to a matter of personal taste. Here are a few different ideas for chilling out.
Misters
Misters come in all different shapes and sizes, from small handheld models to larger misting fans to commercial units that are as big as trailers. The purpose of misters is to cool off your body temperature by periodically spraying yourself with cool water and allowing the water
to evaporate. Misters can either be self-contained units or hook up to an internal water source.
Micro beads
The innovation of micro bead clothing has been popular with both people and their pets. This patented technology also operates using the evaporation system of cooling. Small gel-like beads are sewn into a special synthetic fabric that is then fashioned into bandannas, wristbands and dog harnesses. Soak the entire thing in cold water and the micro beads will stay cold much longer than fabric alone. Then, once the fabric begins to dry, you get a second wave of cooling relief from the evaporation.
Pools, sprinklers and more
Many devices aimed at kids can be equally appreciated by adults. In other words, just because the following isn't as elegant as patio umbrellas or misters, doesn't mean they don't work.
Baby pools are great for a quick dip for you or your dog. They're also easy to fill using a hose and break down into a small size for storage. Then there are things like water guns, slip and slides and more, all of which will keep you cool but also introduce a level of fun into summer. Even something as simple as your garden sprinkler will work, keeping both your and the lawn properly hydrated.
Common Sense
A final word of advice is to use common sense to keep cool. Drink twice as much water as you think you need. In warm, humid weather the body can lose up to 3 liters per hour. In addition, wear loose, light colored clothing. Natural fibers like cotton also breathe better than synthetic polyester and nylon.
