Even if you don't have the money for a big family vacation to Disney World this summer, you can still have a sort of mini-vacation right in your own backyard. Leave the passports, the luggage and the hassle for next year. A day of fun can be had starting out with something as simple as a wooden picnic table.

Getting children outside and away from the television has long been proven as healthier to their growth and development. But don't just let them entertain themselves: plan out an entire Saturday from start to finish and give them something to brag to their friends about the next day at school. Here are a few ideas to have fun and get your kids excited.

Make pizza bagels
This is an easy and tasty activity for you and your family. If you have an outdoor fireplace it's even better. Start out by laying all of the ingredients on your wooden picnic table. This will keep the mess out of the kitchen and you closer to your backyard cookout. Cover one half of a bagel of your choice with pizza sauce.

Next evenly sprinkle on a layer of shredded cheese. Then let your kids pick out what kind of toppings they would like. Standards like pepperoni and sausage are fine, but try and mix in some healthy vegetables too.

To cook indoors, place bagels on a baking pan and warm until the cheese is melted. If you have the luxury of owning an outdoor fireplace, wrap your bagels in foil and place them on the cooking surface. Just be careful to let them cool off a

little before taking a bite; cheese stays hot for a long time.

Crafts
Another activity that gets the family gathered around your old wooden picnic table is some homemade arts and crafts. Once again, you keep any potential messes and spills out of the house while getting to enjoy just being outside. Some ideas for crafts include decorating t-shirts with puff paints, finger painting and macaroni necklaces.

There are an infinite number of crafts to choose from, practically any of which work just as well outdoors as they do in. Plus, with something like t-shirt designing, the paints will dry more quickly outdoors.

Educate
A chance to educate your kids while showing them a good time is an opportunity that should never be passed up. Being outdoors, you can teach your kids some basic lessons about nature that don't require fancy toys or a trip to the zoo.

Grab a pair of binoculars and enjoy some bird watching. You can get books from the library on the birds in your area. Or you can have your kids compare the different kinds of plants in your yard. How do the leaves look different? Why do some plants have needles? Making them more aware of their surroundings will make them into a more conscientious citizen.

These ideas are just some of the many ways that proves you don't need to spend a lot of money to show your whole family a good time. The fun starts with basic things you already have lying around, like a wooden picnic table or a pair of binoculars. From there, the only limits are up to your imagination.
