A cedar planter box is an excellent way to bring the natural beauty of flowers into your backyard. These boxes allow you to plant flowers in a neat, contained environment in whatever arrangement you want.

However, if you don't take the time to plan out your arrangement and properly plant your box, the planter can actually have a negative impact on the aesthetics of your backyard. It will make your box look messy and uninspired, and will reflect poorly on you and your ability to decorate and care for your home. Here are a few tips for making sure that your cedar planter box is as beautiful as possible, so that it will enhance the look of your backyard instead of take away from it.

Make sure to buy the proper supplies for your planter project. Begin by purchasing a variety smaller potted plants at your local nursery or gardening store.

Don't forget to ensure that all require the same amounts of sunlight and water. Otherwise, you will be unable to place your planter in a spot that is beneficial to all your flowers. Also pick plants that are different heights, so that you can arrange them in a manner that allows you to see all of them at once.

Before you dig in and start planting, set your cedar planter in the position from which it will be viewed in your backyard. Do this is ensure that you are designing an arrangement that will be as aesthetically pleasing as possible from the angle from which it will be seen.

Next, fill up the planter with loose

potting soil, leaving two inches at the top of the planter empty.
Then, plan out your arrangement while the plants are still in the pots they came with from the nursery. Make sure that you have the whole planter box designed before removing any plant from its pot. That way, you aren't just haphazardly placing flowers, but know your plan of action instead.

When planning your arrangement, make sure that you plant the tallest flowers in the back, the shortest flowers up front, and the medium-height flowers in between. That way you can see all your flowers at the same time, and your view of the smaller flowers will not be obscured by big, tall plants.

First plant the taller flowers in the middle of the back row of the cedar planter. Continue planting across the back row, and move forwards if you need more space.

Next, use your trowel to make indentations in the dirt surrounding the already planted taller plants and place the medium plants in those indentations. Again, start in the middle and work outwards and forwards.

The shortest plants should be placed in the planter last. They should take up the front rows of your cedar planter, because they will not obscure the view of the taller flowers behind them.

If you follow these easy steps, and then make sure to regularly water and otherwise care for the flowers in your cedar planter box, you will surely be able to enjoy a beautiful and polished-looking arrangement of plants in your backyard. You will impress your guests, and make your yard or patio much more aesthetically pleasing.
