Gum disease is one of those things that you hear about constantly on the news and in commercials on TV. If you're like most people, you really don't understand how detrimental gum disease can be to your social life and your oral health.

To have a real understanding of gum disease, it is important to understand the problems it can cause you. If you've never experienced the negative effects of gum disease, or known someone who has, then you might feel that it is some random thing that they warn you about in toothpaste commercials that truly has no negative effect. You might be under the illusion that gum disease is something the advertising industry cooked up to sell toothpaste.

This is quite far from the truth. Gum disease can cause a myriad of problems that range from bad breath to tooth loss. Bad breath can be pure social destruction for children and adults alike. Tooth loss is irreversible and if you don't have the proper dental insurance there is a chance you will not be able to replace the teeth that you have lost with dentures.

This is a sad prospect. The technical word for the worst state of gum disease is periodontitis. Gingivitis is the most basic form

of gum disease. It is not as advanced as periodontitis, but it still has a significant amount of irreversible negative effects. Once you understand the truly negative outcome an attack of gum disease can have on your mouth, the more important that you understand prevention is, and how vital it is to treat gum disease in Chicago. Gum disease is not just some buzz word that they use in toothpaste commercials with models with perfect teeth. Gum disease is a real threat that can cause dire consequences to your mouth at any stage in your life. In fact, you might already have gum disease in the beginning stages.

If you are experiencing any pain in your gums or in the area surrounding your teeth that is not related to the re-emergence of your wisdom teeth, you might have gum disease. Pain that is accompanied by bleeding, swelling or redness is especially dangerous. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms without pain, this still might be an indication of gum disease as well. Pain in combination with these symptoms is the worst combination. Keep an eye on your teeth to see if you're suffering from any recession of your gum line. This is another telling symptom of gum disease.
