An outdoor porch swing is a relaxing and pleasurable addition to the front of your home, there's no doubt about that. What may be stressful though, is just how you go about procuring one for yourself. There are two main different methods for achieving this end.
First off is being a pre-fabricated swing that's all put together and ready to go. Second, there's the unassembled outdoor porch swing in which a box comes full of various pieces for you the user to put together. As one can imagine, there are definite advantages and disadvantages to choosing one route other another.
Pre-fabricated
Pre-fabricated, or pre-fab furniture is the stuff that modern industry is made from. A pre-fab outdoor porch swing comes all ready off the assembly line and to your door. All you need do is set or hang it up and you're good to go.
Advantages
Obviously, for someone who's all thumbs when it comes to DIY or home projects, the pre-fab model is a godsend. It is also good for the elderly or the infirmed who are physically capable of putting together such a large, heavy and elaborate piece of furniture. A premade model is also a huge timesaver.
Disadvantages
With a pre-fab outdoor porch swing, you're never completely assured of the quality of a piece of furniture. You can't see the joints and hinges so you don't know what exactly is holding the thing together. Pre-fab furniture in general is also slightly lighter and less durable. Also, if one of the pieces needs replacing, it's not only more difficult to figure out
what goes where, but the buyer is simply not as familiar with how the furniture looks and operates.
Unassembled
The second type of furniture is the most common, especially with internet furniture retailers. In this model, an outdoor porch swing is shipped in pieces in which premade holes are already drilled, along with matching hardware. It is the job of the buyer to put this furniture together.
Advantages
In general, putting together unassembled furniture is a snap as companies try and make the process as user friendly as possible, making pieces that fit easily together along with accompanying (often illustrated), easy to follow instructions. By this same token, most people will find that putting together furniture is not terribly time consuming.
The best thing about putting together an outdoor porch swing yourself is being able to first off appreciate a job well done and second to understand the inner workings of your swing, an invaluable asset when something goes wrong. And finally, buying unassembled furniture is cheaper because shipping costs less when pieces can be broken down and stacked in boxes rather than odd-shaped pre-fab pieces.
Disadvantages
The main disadvantage of having to put together furniture oneself is the possibility of getting it wrong. No matter how easy to follow instructions are, sometimes invariably a screw will be left out or things will go awry. Second, putting together furniture, especially something as big as an outdoor porch swing, is a backbreaking, laborious job. For someone with back problems, or for someone on the frail side, there is a definite risk of injury.
