When it comes to dating, there are times when it seems like the girls have all the power. We men are expected to make the first move, while the women have the luxury of shooting us down or accepting our drinks.
But here's a secret: girls can find flirting just as daunting as we do. They worry they're not pretty enough. They're concerned about coming across as boring, tactless or ill-informed. Even when we sidle over with an anxious grin and a pick up line, they're rarely one hundred per cent certain that we're interested. And when they fancy a bit of our attention, they're not really sure how to go about getting it.
Luckily for them, I'm about to explain to you all the little tells girls have when they're trying to get you to notice them.
Let's start at the beginning. You've noticed a cutie keeps looking your way - but how do you know if she fancies you, or if it's just that your hair needs a brushing?
When girls are interested in a guy, it makes them feel vulnerable. If you catch her staring your way, she's going to glance away hurriedly. But she's also going to look back at you two or three seconds later, so keep an eye out for that giveaway second glance.
In a public place, she will find excuses to walk right past you, but will avoid making eye contact when she does. If she's standing close to you, she will start talking and laughing loudly in an attempt to appear like good fun. In a club, she may position herself directly in your line of vision, and start doing sexy dances designed to grab your attention.
Don't wait for her to approach you. For all their talk of equal opportunities, women hate to do the chasing. She would rather spend a week regretting a missed opportunity than actually make a move, so if you like the looks of a girl I'm afraid you will have to go over to her.
When you do get talking, look out for giveaway body language. If she starts playing with her hair, or if her legs and shoulders turn towards you, she is interested in what you are saying. Mirroring your movements signals a connection, and moving closer to you than would normally feel comfortable demonstrates attraction.
Eye contact is a good sign, but many shy girls find it hard to maintain. If she keeps glancing downwards and her voice becomes noticeably quieter, she is nervous but no less interested.
An extroverted girl will stand up straighter and grin widely. Her voice will become much louder and she will laugh enthusiastically at both your jokes and her own.
Pay attention to what she's saying. Girls are very aware of their competition, so she may become critical of female celebrities or any women you both know. She will tell you impressive or embarrassing stories about her life, and more boisterous girls will start alluding to their sexual abilities.
Girls demonstrate an interest in you by giving you compliments, telling you jokes and asking you lots of questions. She will seek your opinion on everything from her current career crisis to the color of candy.
On a more basic level, remember that if a chick is not interested in you she will find an excuse to walk away. If you're not sure if a girl is into you, and you're uncertain of the signs, there is no clearer demonstration of her attraction than the fact that, fifteen minutes into your conversation, she is continuing to chat with enthusiasm.
