Across America today, in thousands of humane societies and animal shelters, both kittens and adult cats are waiting to for a loving home. Unfortunately, only about 24% of the cats in shelters are ever adopted. According to the American Humane Association, over 70% of cats that enter shelters eventually euthanized, since there is no one to adopt them and shelters do not have the funds to take care of them indefinitely.

If you are thinking of adding a cat to your family, please consider adopting from a shelter instead of buying from a breeder or pet store. Not only is it much cheaper to adopt from a shelter, but you can also save an animal from being one of the 9.6 million dogs and cats that are put to sleep in shelters each year.

Your first step in adoption is to decide what kind of cat you want. It can be dangerous to go the shelter with no specific breed or age in mind, because you may fall in love with a cat that you cannot handle or is just not a good fit for your family.

For example, longhaired cats require regular brushing. Be sure to consider how much time and energy you can commit to your cat. Pick out a breed, or several breeds, that you believe would be the best cat for your family.

The next step in the adoption process is the find a shelter. Search online for your city, and if you live in a larger city, you will be sure to find several different choices. Another option is to call the Humane Society national Companion Animal information number, which is (202) 452-1100.

Once you

have located a shelter to adopt from, visit it and meet cats who are awaiting adoption. The most important characteristic when it comes to buying a new cat is temperament. Most shelters will allow you to spend time in a visiting room with different cats, so you can find the one that you get along with the best.

After you find the perfect cat, you need to take care of the adoption requirements. There is usually a small adoption fee, and you will have to register your ct with your local authorities. Don't worry, the shelter will guide you through all the legal work, and it shouldn't take more than a few minutes.

Once you take your new pet home, do everything in your power to create a warm and welcoming environment for him or her. One item you should look into purchasing is an outdoor cat house. This structure will provide warmth and protection from the elements when weather is less than ideal, and will also create a fun place for your pet to play outside.

You should also ensure that you have all the appropriate supplies your cat will need. Food, litter and a litter box, and cat toys are a few of the essentials your pet requires. If you're unsure of what all to buy, take a trip to your local pet store and any sales attendant will be able to tell you what is best for your cat.

Adopting a cat is a rewarding and fairly simple process. Not only do you and your family get a few companion, but you also get to save an innocent animal from being put to death.
