Buying a used car from a garage or dealership is often the most popular way of purchasing a car as most customers feel that it is safer and more reliable to buy from a dealer when compared to buying a used car privately. This is because the dealers will often offer different types of warranties in case the car needs any repairs doing to it throughout a certain period after the sale. Furthermore, you will often find that they will offer a free years MOT and road tax to start with so that the customer feels that they are getting a good deal. Although buyers will sometimes get this offered when buying a car privately, it is very rare that a warranty is offered and therefore the customer is not covered for any repairs that need to be carried out after soon after purchasing the car. When a dealership buys a car, they often fix any problems with it before advertising it for sale, therefore it is less likely for things to be wrong with it when first bought.

When buying a car from a dealership, most established dealerships will carry out certain checks on the vehicle to make sure that it is roadworthy, safe and legal to drive. Therefore, the work has already been done for the customer, unlike if you buy privately as it is up to and strongly advised that the customer does their own checks before purchasing the vehicle, although this will come at a cost.

The more established car dealerships often offer various types of ways to pay for the car such as by cash or through finance, making it more available

and affordable to people. However, when buying a car privately, the buyer will have to pay by cash, cheque or bankers draft or postal order if the buyer accepts them. Furthermore, a large amount of dealerships offer a part exchange scheme which means that if the customer wants to sell their car in order to buy a new one, the dealership will offer to take the old car as part payment for the new car. With this in mind, it is important to note that it is sometimes better to sell the old car privately as it is known that dealerships do not offer the best price for old cars.

One of the advantages of buying a car privately however, is that the customer tends to get a better deal, as the dealerships need to make back the money from the initial outlay spent on services and initial checks. When buying a car from a dealership, it is important to remember that they are looking to make a profit from a sale, therefore they need to raise the price considerably, whereas someone selling their car privately will receive all the money from the sale, so they are less likely to be worried about profits.

Furthermore, it is also useful to remember that most cars in dealerships are advertised at a higher amount than is considered average; therefore the customer should haggle in order to get the best deal that is right for them and their budget. This is why it is always recommended to shop around for a car, so to get a good idea of how much it should cost and how much a seller is willing to accept.
