The good news is that when it comes to determining what kind of vehicle you're going to need to move your shipment you're not usually going to have to worry too much about it. Most courier services that are of any size have a large fleet comprised of many different types of vehicles. The beauty of a company having this size of a fleet is that they have all the options necessary in order to use the perfect vehicle to most effectively move your shipment. This saves you the grief of having to ship around to find a courier company with the right size vehicle just because you're shipping a bigger shipment than usual. The cargo van is still the bread and butter of the delivery industry, but many companies that use them also have everything from bike messengers all the way up to full semi trailers so that they can move any size goods, anywhere. This takes a lot of the worry about vehicle choice out of the equation for the customer.
The only time you should have to worry about actually knowing what kind of vehicle you're going to need for your shipment is if you have a cargo that has special
freight requirements which are not within the normal tolerances. A good example of this is if you're shipping anything that needs to be refrigerated. In that case, you would have to make sure that you're doing business with a courier that has access to the specially designed trucks which have refrigeration units. Another instance of this would be if you have goods which are extremely heavy for their size. If that is the case, you wouldn't want to overburden a smaller vehicle and so may have to request a larger and stronger one.
You can use it as an indication of how useful a courier company is going to be to you by seeing what sizes of vehicles they have. This might not apply if all you ever need to ship is ten pound packages, but if you have orders come in a variety of sizes, it can be very helpful to open an account with a courier that does have access to a wider range of vehicles. Then, rather than having to select what vehicle you need for your shipment you can concentrate on describing your shipment accurately and letting the courier company suggest the most efficient means of transporting your packages.
