German car manufacturer BMW has produced and is still producing a vast array of different car models to meet a range of different target markets. However, throughout the car manufacturers history, the most prominent model is regularly cited as the 3 series.

First off the production line in 1975, the BMW 3 series is marketed as a compact executive car, offering luxury, both in terms of aesthetics and driving experience, as well as being an affordable and economic car.

Without doubt the most popular of BMWs many different car models, the 3 series sales came to a pinnacle in 2005, when they accounted for a staggering 40% of all car sales for BMW that year. When taking into consideration the amount of other models that are available, this is a massively substantial and highly respectable figure.

Throughout its history, which spans over a period of more than three decades, the BMW 3 series has gone through no less than five generations.

The first, the E21 range, was manufactured from 1975 through to 1983 and was available in a three door version only, with a choice of three different engine sizes, 1.6, 1.8 and 2 litres.

The second range, E30, began production in 1982 and ran for just less than a decade to 1991 and was massively popular, available in 3, 4 and 5 door models and with five different engine sizes, including a powerful 2.5 litre diesel.

The successor to the E30 was the E36 and is widely seen as the most

popular of the 3 series models. Its looks had changed from the E30 range and were much more sleek and streamlined, giving it an aura of luxury.

Running from 1998 to 2006, the E46 range followed on from on the E36 and in many ways was simply an updated version, with similar looks, models and engine sizes, but with an increased overall specification.

The 3 series range that is on the market today is known as the E90 range, encompassing E91, E92 and E93 as well. Popular all around the world, the E90 has a whole host of technical features and has won a range of different awards, including being featured in the top ten best selling cars of 2007 in the United Kingdom.

The BMW 3 series range of cars is widely regarded as one of the most successful and popular of all time, which is reflected in the fact that since 1992, it has been featured in the coveted Ten Best list of Car and Driver magazine a massive 18 times, as well as receiving a range of accolades from around the globe throughout its entire history.

If someone is looking to buy BMW cars for the first time, then a 3 series is always highly recommended. Over the years, they have been produced in a range of different styles, from 2 door coupes and convertibles, to 5 door family cars with large boots, ensuring that there is a BMW 3 series for every person on the market.
