How To Reduce The Cost Of Bike Insurance

By UK law, all persons who are wishing to ride a bike on a public road must have some form of bike insurance policy in place. The persons age and experience play no part in the necessity of bike insurance and whether you are the safest rider in the world, having no accidents in a 40 year riding history, the legal requirement is still the same.

However, just because bike insurance is a necessity stated by law, it does not mean that it has to be one that is overly expensive or simply unaffordable.

For many people, insurance policies can seem very highly priced but, with the exception of a small minority, the increased premium costs are generally caused by the policy holders themselves. A prime example is the increase cost of a bike insurance policy due to having penalty points on your license as a result of speeding. If this is the case, insurance companies will see you as a higher risk of being involved in an accident as you are more likely to speed and will therefore increase their premiums to compensate for this additional risk. If you never exceeded the speed limit initially, then the cost of the policy would more than likely have continued to decrease year on year.

There are many simple and straightforward ways of ensuring a bike insurance policy remains as affordable as possible and most of them can be seen as common sense practices.

As mentioned above, by adhering to the Highway Code and

not exceeding any speed limits, policy holders can expect lower insurance premiums in the future. However, by also being a safe rider in general and not being the cause of any accidents, riders are able to accrue a No Claims Bonus, which insurance companies take note of considerably and amend the cost of a policy depending on how many years the rider has not claimed on their policy for.

In addition, one of the easiest ways to reduce the cost of a policy is to look after your bike and ensure that it is not easily accessible to anyone other than the owner.

Keeping a bike securely stored away in a locked and alarmed garage would show the insurance company that it would be very difficult for the bike to be stolen, reducing the risk of them having to pay out, which they can then reflect in their premiums. However, if a bike is left parked in a side street or in an alleyway with no chain or lock, it offers thieves an easy opportunity to steal the bike and insurance companies would consider this to be irresponsible and increase the risk category, in turn increasing the policy premium.

Bike insurance is required law and for some people it can be expensive. For many people though, as long as the bike is kept in a safe and secure location and is cared for, coupled with the policy holder being a safe rider, they can expect cheap insurance premiums for years to come.
