Choosing a motorbike insurance policy can be a laborious process but as it is required by UK law, it is a process that is utterly necessary. Regardless of your age, motorbike or experience, it is an offence to ride a motorbike on a public road without a full and proper motorbike insurance policy in place.
There are three main types of motorbike insurance policies available, with a policy available to suit every motorbike rider. Anyone can take out any of the three policies, but the following information may provide a guideline to which is the most appropriate for your own personal situation.
Third Party. The most basic level of insurance and that required as minimum by law, third party provides no actual cover for the policy holder themselves, only for any other persons who they are involved in an accident with.
Due to the lack of cover, it is generally the lowest policy level available and is only recommended for people who have a low value motorbike or a small insurance budget. The first reason is due to the fact that it may be cheaper to purchase a new motorbike if it needs repairs, rather than pay for a more substantial and therefore costly policy. However, the latter is only because some cover is better than no cover. It is generally always recommended that the more cover that can be taken out, the better; but if your budget does not allow, then third party will usually be the most affordable.
Third Party, Fire and
Theft. Similar to third party with the added bonus of providing cover from any type of fire or theft, this level of cover is recommended for the same people as mentioned above, as well as those who only travel a small distance. For example, if you only travel five miles return to work and back each day on a quiet road, there is little chance that you will be involved in an accident and the only major risk will be the theft of the vehicle.
Fully Comprehensive. For all other criteria, such as a medium to high value motorbikes, variable insurance budgets or extensive mileage, it is highly recommended that a fully comprehensive insurance policy is taken out.
By being the policy holder of fully comprehensive motorbike insurance, you can expect to be covered in all eventualities, whether your motorbike is stolen, damaged by a third party or involved in an accident where you are held liable.
It must be remembered that these points are for guidance only and should be not be adhered to strictly. For example, if a fully comprehensive policy can be afforded to betaken out, then it is always recommended as it offers the most substantial cover.
In addition, it is always advised to carry out full research prior to taking out any type of motorbike insurance policy, as by being aware of what is exactly covered under the policy, you will be able to make a fully informed decision as to whether it is suitable for your needs.
