When you're looking at the various options and potential fees that a courier company might charge you for, there is something called a liftgate that you might see referred to, especially if you are shipping especially large or heavy shipments. The liftgate is a piece of equipment that trucking companies are going to require you to use if you are shipping anything that is going to weight more than 100lbs. This machine will let the company put your shipment on the liftgate from the truck level and lower them to the ground level without a person having to actually lift the package. This is because some packages are simply too heavy for people to lift, some are light enough to lift but could potentially cause injury, and to reduce fatigue on the workers who would be required to be moving all of that heavy cargo. There are also legal, union, and insurance reasons why liftgates are simply required by any delivery Burbank California company that is shipping something that weighs more than 100lbs.

There is essentially only one time that you might not be required to rent a liftgate from your shipping company if you are moving cargo which is packaged in units

which weight more than 100lbs, and that is if you are shipping to and from facilities which have loading docks. Because a liftgate is used to lower and raise shipments from the ground level, a loading dock eliminates the need for one, because the truck can simply back into the loading dock where the cargo can be loaded or unloaded on what amounts to a flat surface without having to raise or lower it. Unfortunately, if you're shipping to or from a location and only one of the two has a loading dock; you're still going to need to rent a liftgate because it will have to be used at the facility which isn't equipped with a loading dock. This is just one reason that loading docks can be very advantageous to companies with large shipping requirements.

Liftgates do cost money, and you will be required to rent one from the shipping company if your shipment meets the criteria for requiring this piece of equipment. The cost is not extremely prohibitive, however, if you are shipping on a regular basis you can quickly see how the fees can add up and a loading dock can actually save you money over the long run.
