While patterned porcelain can be fun and attractive, it is not always suitable for a dinner party, ultimately you want to show off to your friends, having an elegantly set table can help achieve this.
The benefits of white tableware are immense. White practically fits with all types of interior decor and hence is a versatile choice that can be used on a regular basis. Additionally, pieces of white crockery are easily replaced meaning that if a plate is smashed, finding a similar, or identical plate is not a difficult task.
That is not to say that choosing white tableware is the only option. The porcelain on your table is as much down to personal preference as the decor in your home. It is even possible to find crockery that matches a specific theme, for instance for a party or special occasion.
Buying a tableware set however represents a considerable investment. For
the higher quality collections prices can be high and hence keeping this porcelain for special occasions can be advisable. In theory, only using the best crockery for special occasions should reduce the risk of breakage. In a similar vein it can be advisable to buy an everyday set that can be used frequently and is less expensive. As plates, saucers and cups regularly break, having a 'backup set' can be extremely beneficial and cost effective.
For the special occasion tableware however it is strongly advisable to buy a set that has a simple pattern, while it is down to personal preference it is a good idea to look at the tableware used in restaurants. For example, the majority of restaurants will shy away from gaudy designs, instead using plain white. Not only is this a more financially sensible decision, it also means that the focus of the plate is on the food, and not the pattern.
For your dinner parties a special set of tableware is the ideal accompaniment to the evening. This is especially true if the set includes items such as side plates, gravy boats and jugs, the effect of a matching set is often underestimated. With the correct set all that is left to do is to adorn the table with a bunch of flowers and even if the food is terrible, at least the table will look great.
