Roughly 13,000 people will be killed this year in a motor vehicle accident involving a drunk driver. Consider, for example, a recently reported case of a 29 year old man caused a motor vehicle accident on a highway. While going at an excessive speed on the highway he went to tune the CD player in the car. He became frustrated in his attempt, lost focus, and lost control of the car. As the car hit the guardrail the driver attempted to correct it but instead overcompensated. He crossed multiple lanes of traffic, hitting the 5 foot wide concrete median, and going airborne and head-on into oncoming traffic.

The car landed on the hood of another car, smashing through the windshield, flipping over, and then going into a second car. The first car that was hit was driven by a young college student who was taking his girlfriend home after catching a movie. The young man was 22 years old. He had plans to continue his education beyond college. He and his girlfriend were killed by the impact. The second car that was hit had a driver who also suffered multiple traumatic injuries.

The driver responsible for the accident was drinking for more than seven hours on the day of the accident. He started with a six-pack of beer. He then went to a bar where he had at least two

large rum and Cokes. The accident took place shortly after midnight Sunday. Most accidents caused by drunk drivers take place on the weekend. The driver responsible admitted to having been "trashed" at the time of the accident. His blood alcohol level was reported to be .20 which is 2 1/2 times the legal driving limit. The driver was charged and pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide while under the influence. He received a 4-6 year sentence.

These cases are truly tragic. Two young individuals who had bright futures ahead of them lost their lives. A third person was seriously injured. And the driver will serve several years in prison and will presumably carry the guilt of those he killed and injured with him for the rest of his life. Beyond the tragedy there is a reality that needs to be faced by the victims and the families of the victims. They can seek the assistance of an experienced and highly skilled attorney who will protect their rights, thoroughly investigate what happened, and ensure that all potential sources of recovery from those responsible for the accident are fully pursued.

The law firm that handled the case on behalf of the young college student victim's family, for example, was able to report that the case went to trial before a judge who awarded $1.5 million in damages and $500,000 as punitive damages.
