It is fall, and for many of us that means that we feel the need to resume our plans and planning that we left behind for some summer fun. Some people meet this time of year with excitement; they cannot wait to figure out how they are going to make their dreams come true this year. Others meet this time of year with anxiety. It is a reminder to them of what has not gotten done rather than a check in with possibility. Whether you are feeling the excitement or the anxiety, here are some tips that will help you make the most out of your plans.
Prioritize: As much as we think we might like to snap our fingers and have our lives instantly transformed, this is not a possibility. Also, if you think about it long enough, having "it all" now is not all it is cracked up to be. The surest way to build lasting success and deep happiness throughout the process is to figure out what is most important to work on now and to put significant effort in that direction. If you are not sure of your priorities, try this:
1.) Make a list of all the things that you want to do or change.
2.) Check with reality - remember that there is only so much time in a day or days in the week.
3.) Cross off all the items you know can wait or are uninteresting
4.) Pay attention to items that get you feeling excited or perhaps a little anxious
5.) Check these items by seeing how they fit in your life right now.
6.) Remove any that do not fit
7.) Keep going until your list is whittled down to 1-3 items that leave you excited and make sense now.
Organize: Organization
brings up many feelings for people. Many people, who need it, have a tendency not to like it. This is often because they have come to believe that organization is a rigid system that "just does not work for them." There are many different ways to be organized and the best system is the one that works for you. There is one thing that is certain though; no organization means little, if any, progress. Here are a couple tips to help you with your fall plans:
1. The number one thing to do to help you reach your goals is to carve out the time that you are going to commit to reaching your new goals. Not doing this is one of the biggest mistakes people make when starting new projects
2. If you find that you are overloaded, frequently forget things, make many lists and still seem to get nothing done, chances are your organizational system needs and upgrade. It might be worth checking out David Allen's, Getting Things Done for some insights into what might work for you.
Motivate: For whatever reason many people try to motivate themselves through being critical and negative. This negativity wears them down over time and stops them from reaching their intended goals. Instead of being harsh with yourself try:
1.) Rewarding yourself for your daily accomplishments
2.) Be more objective with your criticism. Pretend that you are giving advice to a good friend.
3.) Look for the positive. If you find yourself telling yourself your dream is not possible, look for people or situations that prove that wrong.
4.) Gather support. Find the people in your life who are able to be supportive of you and your goal and tell them how you are feeling.
