After completing a street sweeping and flushing study the city sanitation task of Hamilton, Ontario approved use of regenerative air street sweeping vehicles. These vehicles are the latest of their kind. Vehicles that not only effectively clean all city streets and recreation areas but reduce the presence of particulate matter in the air and the ground as well!
Compared to the standard mechanical broom or older street sweeper models, regenerative air sweepers utilize cutting edge, modern steet sweeping technologies which makes them a lot more effective and efficient!
New Improved Features:
By far, the improved debris pickup technology is the most important breakthrough that regenerative air sweeper manufacturers have ever come up for street sweeping vehicles. A majority of sweepers that have this improved feature have increased debris or leaf pickup power. In regenerative air street sweeping machines, high velocity air does an important job in picking up debris off the street. In some machines, air is first pressurized in the brushing head's upper chamber. This air is then released into the lower chamber through a nozzle that blasts it through.
Another big contributor to the street sweeping effectiveness of this type of sweepers is the angle at which the air blasting nozzles are located. Because of the typical angle, the high velocity air that is released can form a knifing effect which is most effective in picking up leaves sticking on the asphalted street and even those located in between cracks.
Another improved feature is noise reduction technology that addresses the noise issues that street sweeping machines all over the Greater Toronto Area have. In addition, since fan noise contributes greatly to the total amount of noise the machine makes,
this is where this breakthrough focuses. For many brands of regenerative air sweepers, the blower fan that is responsible for the pressure that brushes debris off the street has been re-engineered to reduce noise up to a considerable percentage.
Effective Particulate Matter Collection:
Recent studies made in the Greater Toronto Area have addressed the importance of removing inhalable particulate off the street. One of these is PM10 (aka Particulate Matter at 10 micrometers) which is known to contain toxic chemicals such as chromium, manganese and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The sources of these chemicals can vary but can come from fuel combustion in vehicles and construction dusts carried by dump trucks and other industrial vehicles.
Because of the added features that regenerative air sweepers have, the capacity to collect PM10 from the street is increased. A majority of brushing heads are surrounded by double-belted flaps or "curtains" which contain the dust particles inside a working scope. Incidentally, these curtains also maximizes the effect of the vacuum-the opposite air pressure created by the blower which acts to collect debris and dust off the street. Compared to older models such as the mechanical brooms previously used in GTA, regenerative air sweepers can be more effective in collecting PM10.
Breakthrough Options:
Apart from the added features, some sweepers offer the option of added brooms. This option features an additional broom, which can be placed in front of the blast orifice. This specialized broom mostly used for getting the hard to remove particles that are often missed with the regular broom.
An important feature that comes with this option is the adjustable air blast. It can be adjusted to specifically flush and collect wet or packed down debris.
