Some people may consider buying used cars a simple and straightforward process. They may have purchased them all throughout their life and took advice and tips from their parents who also purchased used cars.
However, whether they have always been given a company car and have recently retired or were given a new car after passing their driving test but now need a replacement car, a substantial amount of people have never purchased a used car before and find the process somewhat daunting.
First and foremost, it is important not to get stressed or annoyed by the whole situation as buying used cars is no different to buying a new computer or a new pair of shoes. Far too many people become anxious about buying a used car and end up purchasing a car they do not want or is not suited to their needs. Therefore, it is important to always take a few moments to think about all parts of the process.
It is absolutely imperative before buying used cars that you have in your mind a vague idea of what type of car you are looking for, as well as writing down some points that are considered necessities. Depending on the individual, these points can vary from simply the need for central locking to ISOFix car seat points, automatic locking, large amounts of rear leg room, a spacious boot and air conditioning.
The reason behind writing down your requirements is exactly the same reason why it is recommended you do not go food shopping on an empty stomach or without a shopping list, as you will generally buy something you do not need or is not suitable. If you have a checklist of requirements that your future vehicle should have, you will be able
to mark them off if a vehicle is found that you like and a judgement can be made on it based on its suitability.
Further to making your list, it is a good idea to try and take recommendations off friends and family of reliable used car dealerships. Unfortunately, there are still a handful of dealerships that sell used cars at unrealistic prices or that are not as described and therefore if a reputable garage is used by a friend or relative, it is advised to have a look at which cars they have on offer first.
Haggling is an important part to used car buying and although it may not come naturally to some, others feel completely at ease asking for incentives or for the price to be lowered.
Used car buyers must note that car salesmen often get paid on commission depending on how many cars they sell and will generally have a considerable amount of leeway in terms of what they can sell the car for to ensure the sale. For example, whilst a car may be advertised at ten thousand pounds, the salesman may have a base price of eight thousand five hundred pounds that they can sell the car at, meaning one thousand five hundred pounds can be saved by simply asking the salesman to lower the price.
It is important to remember that until you sign your name on the agreement, you are under no obligation to purchase the vehicle. Take it for a test drive and have a look at what the best price the salesman can offer, but if you are not happy at any part of the buying process, simply be polite and walk away from the showroom as the right used car will be available for you somewhere.
