Whatever purchase you make throughout your life, you do so because it is suited to your needs, requirements and desires. Certain chocolate bars are chosen because they are preferred over others. A dishwasher is bought to make the cleaning process easier. A three bedroom house is purchased because the one bedroom flat you were living in is no longer big enough. Every purchase, regardless of how big or small, is done so for a reason.

However, when cars are purchased, many people fail to go into great enough detail to ensure that the car they have bought is the one that is most suited to their needs. Yes, it looks stunning and has a great MPG figure, but is it really suitable for two children and a pushchair?

Cars can be expensive purchases and therefore it is imperative that the right one is chosen as unless it is bought outright, you are generally going to be stuck with it for however long your car finance or loan deal is for.

Initially, rather than looking at brands and models of cars, you should look at what you are exactly looking for in car. For instance, although it can be tempting to buy BMW three series or a Jaguar XKs, they may not be completely suited to your needs, which is why it is important to create a list of requirements.

Lists of necessities and requirements can vary a lot in size and contents, but there should generally be at least three points that have to be

regarded as an absolute minimum for a car to have. Some people may think that three points is a lot as they are open to any thing, but when looking in greater detail, several points will always be come apparent.

For example, whilst the overall make or model that is chosen is not relevant, you may realise that although a two seat Smart Car is suitable in almost all ways, it is not feasible to pick the grandchildren up on a weekend and therefore one requirement would be two have at least four seats. Similarly, budget may come into it and if no more than a few thousand pounds can be spent on a car, this should also be noted.

Do not be afraid to create an extensive list of requirements, but make sure that they are all requirements. Luxuries are great to have, but they are just that and for instance, a CD player or electric windows would generally be considered a luxury rather than a necessity.

Once your list has been compiled, it is time to head out and look at what is available. If you have a specific make in mind, then great, take a look at their dealerships. However, it is important to not restrict yourself to one make or model. Although you may set out to buy BMW, you may discover that none of their models fulfill your criteria and therefore another make should be looked at, particularly if the most basic of your necessary criteria is not met.
