When you are looking to purchase a new car to replace your current car, whether brand new from a main dealership or second hand from one of the may used car garages that are available up and down the country, there are two main options that can be chosen to sell your old car.
Firstly and probably the process that is familiar to most is to exchange your current car as part of the payment for your new car, known as part exchanging. This is generally a really straightforward process and simply involves the dealership giving the customer a certain amount for their old car, taking this off the value of the new car and effectively buying the car off them.
As part exchanging is one of the easiest ways to sell a car that is no longer needed, most people tend to pick this option as it is almost completely hassle fee. However, it must be noted that dealerships will often give you the lowest value possible for your car and therefore for those looking to maximise the money received from their car, the next option may be the most suitable.
By selling your car privately, you are effectively becoming a car salesman. Although there are considerable benefits to selling cars privately, whilst it may look easy, it can be a very demanding process that requires a lot of thought and confidence.
To start with, you must decide how much you want to receive for your vehicle. Rather than guessing how much you think that your car is worth, which tends to end up how much you would like to receive from the sale of it, a lot of research should be carried out to ensure that
you do not over or under price the vehicle.
Local newspapers are a fantastic way to discover how much a car is worth, as are car magazines and the internet, although prices on auction websites should not be looked at or considered as they are often slightly lower than the private market value.
Once you have determined how much you are going to sell your car for, you must advertise it in places you so deem appropriate. Although some people will put a free advert in every possible newspaper possible, as well as in shop windows and online, one well-placed paid advertisement in a car magazine could save hours of work looking for places that offer free advertising.
Choosing where to advertise your car is completely an individual choice, but the audiences for all outlets should be looked at to ensure that the most suitable method is chosen.
Finally, if the adverts are well received, you should expect people to call you up asking to arrange a time look at the car. This can be the most difficult part of the process as you have to be confident and not be put off by what prospective buyers say. Remember, you are in control as it is your car sale and therefore if you have a lowest price in mind that you will sell it for, do not go below this if you do not feel comfortable in doing so.
Whilst you sell cars privately, it can be more problematic than part exchanging them, but you can generally expect to receive a greater amount of money, which can then be put towards the price of a new car, reducing the cost further than a part exchange deal.
