SCENARIO 1: Mike gets up at 6am every morning. He takes a shower, has coffee, and gets dressed just in time to make the 45 minute commute to the office every morning. Mike likes to listen to jazz in the car on the way to work; it puts his head in the right place to get his work started for that day. It's one of the tricks he taught himself, to get through his day easier. It doesn't really help though. Mike really doesn't like his job at all very much anymore, and the commute feels less and less worth it everyday, but he won't get a new job. Mike wants to put in enough hours with this company to where he can actually start thinking seriously about his financial future. Mike wants to go to Jamaica in the next few years, and buy a house. Mike wants to start a family. Working at this job, he is beginning to feel like that will never happen.
SCENARIO 2: Mary gets up around 8 or 9 o'clock every morning. She gets up, goes to the gym and comes home to take the dog for a walk around the block. She comes home, sets a pot of coffee and starts to straighten up her living room. It drives Mary absolutely crazy when her house is dirty. By noon, Mary has decided that it is high time she go to work. So she grabs her laptop and sets up camp in her office for the next few hours. Mary had better get busy. She had lots of work to do and was looking forward to a trip to the Cayman Islands that next month. Mary put her favorite jazz record on to get her started; jazz helped relax her mood to keep her at a calm during the day time. Then she gets to work. Mary loves having a home-based business, so she can make the money she needs without having to travel far at all.
If you are looking to start a business to generate a little residual income for yourself, chances are your life is more similar to the first scenario then anything else. The character in the second scenario has taken charge of her finances, and has already set up a business for herself at home, whereas the first character is still trying to find his place in the world, job wise. He feels like he's at a dead end and just wants something better for himself, for his future, and for his family.
Starting a business is a great way to start a stream of residual income at home. That way, you are able to put in a certain amount of time each day working, but bring in income even when you're not sitting in front of your computer. Having a business at home can give you the extra money you need to live the day to day life that you want, while still being able to put money away for things like vacations to the Cayman Islands.
