There are not many times in a year that any of us actually think about our attic. We might normally let them cross our minds preceding holidays if that is where we keep our decorations or maybe in the summer months when we are considering having a yard sale. Other than these events, we do not generally need to go up there at all.
There is another good reason why we should venture up there at a time that may not appear to be a good time at all and that is while there is a good steady down pour. You may wonder why, but it is really quite simple. When it is raining fairly hard, it is the very best occasion to see if you are having leaking in your attic.
Quite often if there are shingles on the roof that have been loose for a while, the water will make its way under the tar paper and between the cracks where the wood of your attic is put together. The water will trickle down the board structures in the attic and can be seen pretty easily.
When you are cautious and check the issue often enough, you can locate water leaks and know where they are stemming from before any serious water devastation has been done. Fixing or adding a few new shingles will be easy when you consider putting on a whole new roof. Often times, minor roofing jobs such as these might be done yourself if you are not scared of high places. Any roof jobs can be risky, even more so if your housetop has a lot of slant to it. Most of the time, it is better to leave the roofing to more skilled specialists.
Another reason for water damage in the attic is from dampness. Condensation will sometimes come about if moist warm air filters up into an attic from the living places down below in the home. High humidity levels in the house's living space will add to the condensation on the wood in your attic.
After a time this could develop rotting on the wood. There are a few things that should help correct this problem and they are adequate insulation of the attic floor, sealing around your attic door, and proper exhaust fans in the bathrooms and kitchen. This can make the attic cooler and keep the air from beneath the attic from harming the wood upstairs. A little prevention today can eliminate extra cost and repair tomorrow.
