There are only a few things that can compare to the joy of owning a dog. Dogs are loyal companions who stay by our side no matter what kinds of stupid things we do. Almost anyone can be a dog owner, but there are many kinds of things you should learn and be comfortable with before you take on the responsibility of full time dog ownership.
First off, it is very important to point out that you understand that owning a dog is a full time responsibility. It is not just something you do every once in a while. You must commit to caring for that puppy or dog for however many years you are blessed to have it in your life. So, the first, and most important thing to concentrate on is to choose the right kind of dog for your family.
If you live in a small apartment for example, an extremely large dog may not be the best choice for you. You must also factor in the size of your home, your general schedule and your usual lifestyle too. You can find tons of information on the internet about dog breeds, so you really have an opportunity to research your choices. You also want to be sure that you can keep up with the activity and grooming level of the dog. There are some breeds who require lots of daily brushing, while others barely need to see a brush at all.
As mentioned above, exercise is unfortunately an often overlooked area. Some dog breeds need plenty of exercise, while others really need that interaction of their owner playing with them on more than one occasion daily. You want to think about these things ahead of time and what you have the time and energy for when deciding to get a dog. If your dog cannot get
the physical activity it really needs it will not be at its optimum health and it may drive you crazy because if it doesn't get its exercise the right way, it will find ways to complete those exercise needs, probably in a very destructive way.
Health is another issue to consider. Dogs require regular visits to a veterinarian, if not more than once a year. Depending on where you live your dog may need several shots to protect it from parasites and diseases. Access to, and the ability to pay for, a quality veterinarian are things you must plan for.
Another important part of keeping your dog healthy is by making sure they have good food. There are a lot of different brands of dog food out there. When choosing dog foods be sure to read the labels carefully. A lot of dog foods are loaded down with junk and fillers so look for quality ingredients and watch your dog for signs of how well the dog food works for them.
Lastly you need to consider the grooming needs your pet will require. All dogs should have their teeth brushed, nails trimmed and ears cleaned. Some breeds will have a need to have their ears or teeth cleaned more often than others. There are also some dog breeds who need special cleaning around the eyes to remove tear stains. Brushing and bathing your pet is something you will need to work in to your routine.
Dog ownership is a huge responsibility, but don't lose sight of the fact that it is also a wonderful joy. There is nothing sweeter than coming home at the end of a long day to a dog who unconditionally loves you, is happy to see you and can't wait to spend time with you no matter how bad your day has gone otherwise.
