When an old car is about to be upgraded to a newer model, car owners have two options available to them and they can either sell their old car to the dealership in which they are purchasing the new car from (often as a part exchange deal, therefore reducing the cost of the new car) or they can decide to sell the car themselves privately.
For a lot of people, selling the car to the garage is always the option that is chosen. Quick and simple, it takes only a matter of minutes and the price is very often the one that is stated in many industry price guide books. Granted, the price received will not be as much as if the car were sold privately (to sell cars to dealerships, a person must take a decreased amount of money over other methods, as the dealership will look to sell the car on and therefore will need to make a profit), but it is still regularly chosen, primarily for the fact that it is almost completely hassle free and is completed in minutes.
Due to the price received being lower than what would be had if the car was sold privately, many people contemplate the possibility of selling the car privately. However, so many people are put off this method for the fact that they believe it is too complicated for them to sell cars privately. Whilst it may be slightly more complex than simply selling a car to a dealership, with the correct amount of knowledge and information, it is extremely possible for anyone to sell a car privately
without any major hassle.
One of the first things that should be noted when deciding to sell cars privately is that the car owner is the one that is in charge as they have to effectively become a car salesperson. All parts of the process will need to be carried out by the car owner, from advertising right through to finalizing the sale and therefore it can be a very time consuming process.
Before a car is advertised privately, it is important that the owner knows a substantial amount of information about the car. If the owner is an avid fan of cars and takes great pride in their vehicles, this will not generally be a problem. However, for other people who simply have a vehicle to commute to and from work, it is worthwhile spending time reading up on the exact features of the car, as well as being aware of its history, such as previous MOTs and services.
When it comes to advertising the car, there are various options available, from selling the car via means of an online auction to more traditional methods, such as an advertisement in the local newspaper. Whichever option is chosen, it is important that enough research is carried out to ensure that the audience of the selling method is the one that will be interested in the car that is for sale.
Overall, there are substantial benefits to selling cars privately and whilst it may take more time and therefore be more complicated than using a car in part exchange for a newer model, the financial reward will usually be worth it.
