There comes a time in the life of everyone who owns a car when it is necessary to sell it on and upgrade to a newer model. Not always by choice, selling the car that has been so trusty and reliable for years can be a difficult process, particularly if selling it privately.
When the time comes to actually sell the car, there are two primary options available. The first is the one that is particularly popular as it removes any hassle or troubles that may be encountered with selling a car and it is to use it in a part exchange deal for a new car. Should the car be in an acceptable condition, most dealerships will provide the seller with the full current market value for dealership sales, meaning that whilst it will be lower than if the car owner were to sell the car themselves, the process is completed in a matter of minutes.
The second option is to sell the car privately and is the one where a greater amount of money can be made than in a part exchange deal, but it also requires more work to ensure that the best price possible is received.
When selling a car privately, the owner should ensure that it is in the best condition that it can possibly be, starting with the interior of the car and finishing with the exterior.
Firstly, any loose items should be removed from the car so that it is completely empty of personal belongings and can be cleaned thoroughly. The car should then be completely vacuumed, including any storage areas and particularly around the driving area, where a lot of dust and debris can accumulate.
Further to vacuuming, a wet cloth should be used over any appropriate parts (such as the dashboard), followed by drying the area and finishing with a high quality
car polish.
Once the interior of the car has been cleaned, work should begin on the exterior and it is recommended to first take the car through a car wash at a local garage. It need not be the most expensive option, as long as any dirt is removed from the car. This part of the process can be carried out by hand, but a lot of time can be saved by giving the car a quick and short clean first through a car wash.
The exterior of the car should then be hand washed, not forgetting to include the tyres and alloys or wheel trims, wing mirrors and windscreen wipers. To finish, an appropriate wax and polish for the car should be applied to give it a fantastic showroom appearance.
Although it may take longer than normal to wash the car before selling it, a full and proper clean can be the difference between a car selling immediately and one that takes weeks, if not months, to sell.
After the cleaning has been completed, the car must be advertised and it is important to advertise it in the most relevant places to the target audience and car specification. For example, if the car was a recent Audi model and the seller was aiming for a young market, it would be worthwhile placing an advertisement in an online advertisement website which has a sell Audi section. Conversely, a classic Audi or one that required restoring would be much more suited to, in general, an older market and therefore a dedicated publication that has a buy / sell Audi section would be ideal.
Whichever way a car is sold, to achieve a quick and simple sale with no hassle, the car should be cleaned, both inside and out to ensure that it looks as attractive as it possibly can to potential buyers.
