There isn't really a business out there that hasn't been impacted in some way by the development of communications technology. The courier industry is no exception, and in fact is a better example than most of how business has changed. When you look at all the ways that you can communicate with a Washington DC courier service now compared to thirty years ago, it becomes clear that things have changed. These changes also give you a lot more flexibility in terms of what you require of your company.

The biggest changes that this technology has brought to the courier industry have to do with how we can communicate with a courier. GPS wireless dispatches allow for their dispatch office to adjust routes on the fly, something that is often very useful. Also, the simple advance of the cellular telephone allows for a great deal more contact with delivery drivers. However, this isn't a license to just try and stop deliveries mid transit whenever you please, as the issue at hand is more complicated than that.

The type of delivery that you are making will be the largest determining factor in deciding whether you can stop a delivery mid transit, and how much it will cost

you to do so. In almost every case, you are going to be charged at least some kind of a fee for that action, so be prepared for it.

If you're just shipping a parcel with a carrier that has a truck full of deliveries from all their clients, then this usually isn't too big of a deal. You will be charged a large fee for doing this though, as the courier company is essentially going to have to make the delivery twice with that package. It will be taking up space in their vehicle throughout the completion of their route, as well as on the next day when they return it to you.

You have more flexibility if you're shipping an entire load of cargo on an FTL basis. This means that you have hired the entire truck. This would also apply if you've hired a smaller courier to work full time for your company from your courier service. In these cases, you are paying for them whatever they are doing. That means if you for some reason have an unforeseen emergency and do need them to return to you, you would not be out of line or charged extra for making that request.
