Can I Negotiate On My Shipping Rates?

The pricing of a courier company is something that many first time shippers have questions about. This can be particularly confusing because the way that any Des Moines courier service figures out their final price quotes is not usually going to be a simple flat rate but instead the result of a complicated formula. As such, it is often very unclear what the pricing is going to be, what is fair, and if there is any flexibility allowed with the prices which you are quoted when shipping.

The amount of flexibility that you are going to be allowed in negotiating your rates with a courier company is going to depend on the type of courier that you are using to ship your goods. If you're using a large company that ships all over the world, their rates are usually fairly set. The only way that you might have a chance to negotiate a new rate with them is if you're shipping incredibly massive amounts of cargo. That way, it might be worth it to them to at least discuss it with you.

On the other hand, when you're shipping with a smaller courier company you have a better chance of success in this regard.

Smaller courier companies have a lot more flexibility, because they don't have company policy handed down from huge corporate offices that they have to follow no matter what. The ability make and follow their own policy does give them some leeway.

As always though, the more business that you are giving a company, the better chance you will have of any kind of successful negotiation. When you're shipping a lot with a company they're going to want to keep your business. Sometimes, if this means that they're going to have to bend a little on their rates, they may be willing to do so.

If you're just looking to save money on your shipping, sometimes it can be worth just having a consultation with your courier company. They are shipping and logistics experts. Because of that, they can sometimes come up with efficient shipping models that might be able to save you money in other ways other than just negotiating a different base rate.

Don't bother with trying to save a few pennies on an individual shipment if you feel you need to negotiate with a courier. Instead, try and work out a deal for your company exclusively, such as a long term company discount.
