Millions of Americans suffer from sleep apnea, and there are many different ways to treat the condition in San Diego. These can range from snoring strips and medications to facial masks, CPAP machines and dental treatments. However, before the problem can be treated it must be understood. Sleep apnea sufferers in San Diego might have weak windpipes that tend to collapse when they sleep, they might be overweight and have too much weight at their throats or there could be other causes for the condition. The simple definition of the problem is the disruption of breathing during sleep. It can become a life threatening condition if left untreated. Unfortunately it can go undiagnosed in as many as 90% of people who actually have it because they are unaware that the stop breathing in their sleep...because they are not awake, they are not conscious of it.

Some of the common treatments for the disorder can include surgery, the use of a CPAP machine and dental treatments. Many people are unaware that dental treatments have anything to do with the condition. Since people commonly choke and gasp to draw in breath, they experience loud snoring and awake suddenly to begin breathing again, they might also sweat frequently throughout the night, they can have headaches, a sore throat, dry mouth and feel exhausted during their days without realizing how

exhausted they really are. It is a serious problem because with years of lacking sleep a person is much more prone to having a stroke or heart attack.

In some cases, the shape of a persons head and neck may actually be a cause of sleep apnea for people in San Diego. This points to the problem of a persons airway being smaller when a person lays down for sleep in a certain position, and is most often noted when the person lies on his or her back. Other causes include but are not limited to large tonsils or adenoids, obesity, relaxation of the tongue and throat muscles, smoking, exposure to secondhand smoke, nasal congestion, and a family history. If a person suffers from immune system abnormalities, severe heartburn, acid reflux, high blood pressure, hypothyroidism, acromegaly, vocal cord paralysis, post polio syndrome, Marfans syndrome, Down syndrome, or amyloidosis, he or she may also develop sleep apnea, which is why there are so many people in the city who suffer from the condition and may not even realize it.

Dentists play an important role in the treatment of sleep apnea. Dentists along with physicians, psychologists and respiratory therapists might work together to treat each patient. Each patient responds to different treatments differently than others. There are different dental appliances, lower jaw adjustment devices, and oral devices that can help treat sleep apnea in San Diego.
