They say that the perfect job is one where you get paid to do what you love and enjoy. Many people, who have a passing interest in cooking or baking then take this to heart and think to themselves that they can sustain an entire career out of it. They enjoy cooking, so why not get paid for it at the same time? This applies to both novice cooks with genuine talent, and those cooks whose cooking prowess is composed more of enthusiasm than actual technical ability.

Be warned: learning how to be a chef and doing it as a full time career is not a decision to be taken lightly for it is a career that demands perfection, meticulous attention to detail and an extremely strong work ethic. You need to be thick skinned in order to contend with the abuse and criticism that will no doubt fly your way as you deal with an irritable and under stress head chef where they are your boss, or your colleague. You will need to cope with erratic work hours that can quite literally vary on a week to week basis, meaning that you are not able to clearly identify times when you can be with your nearest and dearest. Studies have shown that divorce rates among chefs and their partners are higher than those of other professions, and given the extremely stressful conditions which they are exposed to, it is little wonder.

What a lot of people underestimate is that being a chef

is an extremely physically demanding job as well, as you will need to lift heavy kitchenware and equipment around. When you are cooking for in excess of a hundred people, you will not have the luxury of slow walking the workload, you will need to be on the ball and focused at all times. The sweat will pour off you due to the extremely high temperatures in the kitchen area, caused by the ovens that need to be kept on a continual basis to ensure that the preparation cycle is not compromised in any way.

In order to succeed as a chef you will also need to have a real creative flair as well, for example, the ability to differentiate between the various spices and herbs that are available in order to determine which combinations work and those which do not. Furthermore, you will also need to ensure that the food prepared is also done so in an appetising and aesthetically pleasing manner if you want to win over your customers. Otherwise, you will have the plate returned to you with a stern eye from the waiter in question as well as an extremely unhappy customer.

After reading all this, if you still think you want to get involved in the cooking profession then your best bet is to ensure that you attend a culinary course, or a college degree. This will open a lot of doors for you and furthermore, ensure that you do not need to work from the very bottom.
