The puppy you have purchased seems to be growing as rapidly as each day pass. Well, most dogs really grow fast and before you know it, their bodies start to wither and their health starts to fail. You have to be ready for this since it is true that humans get attached to their pets especially if they are as affectionate and as loyal as these Akita dogs.
This kind of breed really is one of the most caring and loving dogs that seem to be you shadow since he always finds a way to follow you around. Remember the story of the first Akita Inu? Inu in Japanese is translated in English as dog. Akita is a region by the way, that is found in Japan. So in other words, this breed is called an Akita Dog.
As puppies, they are so full of life and of course, like little children, their energy levels seem to not go down at all. The moment their energy levels go down, they fall asleep and when they wake up, well, riot begins all over again. These Akita puppies continue growing until they reach 3 years of age. That seems to be a short span of time to really mature but did you know that dog years is a whole lot different from human years?
There used to be a belief that for every year a human advances, it should be more or less equated to 7 dog years due to the fact that dogs hit their maturity level in only a couple of years. Well, this isn't all that true. You see, that formula was based on hunches but as research shows, the real formula to convert dog years to human years is like this. His first birthday is equivalent to 16 human years. Two years after, he will be 24 human years old. When he reaches 3, he will be 30. After the third year, add 5 human years. Now that is a long and lasting bond!
Take for example; if your Akita puppy celebrated his third birthday party, he is already 30 years old. Then on his fourth birthday party, he will be 35 years old. So you cannot actually say that if your newly born son is as old as your puppy considering you purchased him as a newborn pup, every birthday party that they will celebrate, they will be of the same age or the puppy will be 7 years older every time.

As each day progress, your full grown Akita dog has been showing some signs of weakness. You keep on visiting your trusted Vet yet always return home with the same answer over and over. He is getting old already and you just have to wait for few months before he will go to Akita Inu Tengoku or Akita dog heaven.
How long has he been with your family? Time flies so fast together with his warped speed growth that you seem not to notice that your once jumping bundle of fur is now a frail, sleepy dog. Gone were the days when you even tried looking for really thick leather leashes to hold him while you walk to the park.
Akita dogs that have reached their full maturity are really strong and they may even weigh beyond their 130 pounds. You may think that you are heavier but this dog is all muscle and your weight is just beer, fat and water. A couple of months ago your vet has advised you to breed your Akita dog since he is a good breed. He was spared from all those bad health conditions such as blindness and even Epilepsy.
Pat yourself at the back for doing a good job in raising your Akita Inu. Well, all things really have their own happy ending but in this case, a sad one. You see Akita dogs have a life span of 10 to 12 years. There are some hardcore breeders who have lengthened the life span of these dogs to 15 years, well, their dogs may be physically fit and they have been rigorously trained to combat fatigue and other disease.
Some Akita dogs may only reach the minimum life span which is 10 years since these dogs are prone to hereditary related complications to joints and thyroid glands. Since your dog was spared from all these complications, your Vet also advised you to breed your male dog.
It is a sad moment to ask the Vet to put him to sleep since your dog is a great companion and defender of your children. They were even voted as the most disciplined kids ever since your puppy arrived several years ago. The Akita dogs really function well with older and more behaved children since they get annoyed by all the commotion that they create.
You have indeed raised a good dog even and thank your trainer too for a job well done in curbing his aggressive temperament whenever visitors are in your home and they bring along their noisy children. Your dog learned a few tricks of behaving himself when there are guests and he allows them to touch him only after you have introduced them to him.
It's time to start another life with the future litter of your beloved dog. It will be alright to let him go since he has reached golden years. Although it will be impossible to replace him, his soon to be kids will continue his legacy.
