Most of our natural resources like minerals and metals are found deep inside the earth and a lot of effort has to be made to extract them for our use. Since the area where a particular reserve like oil or gas may be present is huge, several holes have to be drilled. This process of drilling holes to check the availability of gas underground is known as Gas Well Drilling.

Procedure

In theory it is easy to imagine that holes of thousands of feet depth will be drilled into the surface of the earth to explore the presence of gas. This is, however, an extremely difficult and sensitive job as it is almost impossible to control the direction of the holes being drilled. Also, the cost per foot of drilling increases exponentially as the depth increases and more power and effort is required to accomplish it.

Several experts are involved and one of their main jobs is to ensure that the pressure is sufficient enough to prevent any kind of blowouts, but not excessive enough to rupture the hole being made. These experts usually have years of experience and use the most advanced of equipment to try and be as sure as is possible, in this dynamic environment.

Surrounding terrain

The quality and speed of gas well drilling depends almost completely on the terrain of the region where work is being undertaken. A rocky or a mountainous terrain can be extremely difficult to drill and may even harm the equipment being used. Therefore, the

equipment used should be selected with extreme care.

The area where drilling is underway is usually isolated and no one is allowed to come near it due to safety issues. This is not much of a concern if the drilling is being undertaken on a secluded mountain range or in the deep sea.

Equipment used

The equipment used has to be of the best quality possible so as to ensure that there are no accidents and the drilling is accomplished as planned. Even though there are experts who monitor the way the drilling is preceding, even they cannot cover for low grade or faulty equipment. It is hence of utmost importance to go for top quality equipment, as not only the drilling, but also the safety of all those present, depends on it.

Importance and benefits

Gas well drilling is an extremely important task, as even after the various technological advancements, we cannot pinpoint the exact area where gas is present. Even the most advanced of satellite images and gadgets would only indicate a general area. In such a scenario, small holes need to be drilled into the earth so as to ascertain the exact area where gas is present.

A number of reputed and large organisations are involved in this type of drilling and most of them have years of experience in the job. In spite of all the expertise, the huge amount of money involved and the enormous profit margins, this is not an easy job and requires complete dedication at all times.
