Originally, decorative Mexican blankets were used as cheap outer clothing that were first worn by the poorer working people of Mexico and Guatemala. They are also often called serapes, and are the traditional striped weave that is hung on walls as interior decorations today or are worn as garments. They are made into soft rectangular blankets with an opening in the middle for the wearers head.

Today the Mexican blankets, or serapes are also known as Saltillos or falsa blankets, and they have evolved into versatile designs with many decorative uses. If you go on vacation to Central America, you will find the serapes in numerous markets, shops and little vendor stalls. They are notable for their inter mixed, band like colored design. The largest stripe is normally the primary color, and it is repeated throughout the weave. Other complimentary colors are also present and repeated. By design, since they are hand made, each Mexican blanket is original and unique.

The serapes add a decorative touch to any room in the house and can be a great addition to rooms that seem to be otherwise missing a certain feeling of warmth. The rich and vibrant colors add quite a dramatic

flair, whether they are draped over sofas and chairs or hung on the walls. Their decorative versatility is one of the aspects that make them so popular. They can be used as sofa throws, table covers, bedspreads, wall hangings and even a light floor rug. They can be folded into a fan shape design to accentuate their colors, and you will find them in this style in many restaurants in Mexico. If you have taken a trip to Central America, hanging one of these that you purchased during your trip is an excellent way to reminisce about your trip and bring back those memories long after you have returned home.

There are many popular uses for the Mexican blankets outside of the home too. They might serve as picnic clothes or Yoga blankets, beach blankets or anything else similar. Some people enjoy an afternoon nap in their hammocks with their serape, and they also make great gifts. They are often given to loved ones as housewarming gifts, Christmas presents and birthday gifts and are popular for use for just about any occasion. These Mexican blankets are also popular as gifts for the college student who is venturing out away from home.
