"Follow your instincts. You alone know where you really want to go." Donald Trump
Who can doubt the wisdom of Donald Trump. Has he had failure in his life? Of course he has, and it was very public failure at that! Did it slow him down? No. As a matter of fact he comes back stronger, bigger, richer every time. What's his secret? What is the secret of all successful business people?
Be Driven
To be truly successful in business today you have to give your ideas everything you have. No ideas are too crazy to be considered. No questions are too silly to ask, especially of yourself.
Should every idea be pursued, of course not. But some of the most successful businesses have been based on what many have thought of as ridiculous ideas. Just ask the creator of the Pet Rock or the company that picks up your dog poo! How many times do you think those people were told they were crazy, "No one is going to pay for that!" They must have 'known' something no else knew and they were ready to be fearless.
Be Fearless
Be fearless of failure, fearless of public opinion, and while this sounds crazy, fearless of success. Often in life we don't achieve all that we're able to because of our fear of success. You may be thinking, what is there to fear from success? Many people both consciously and sub-consciously are afraid of the changes in their lives that will come from success.
- Is it ok to be more successful than my parents, my spouse?
- Will my friends perceive me as they do now?
- Will I still fit into the life I've created?
These are all questions that you need to ask yourself and have an answer for in order to truly achieve the success you are looking for. If you are not in the place where you are ready to take on that success, both emotionally and practically, you can bet that the success won't be coming your way.
Things that you are aware of and unaware of can sabotage your success. You may see the obstacles coming but it's just as likely that you will unwittingly place those obstacles before you. Then, when you trip, your fears will
be realized. You won't have the success you've been working so hard far but nor will you have to deal with your jealous friends, your higher tax rate (just another sign of success), or the decision of where to vacation when you want the mountains but your partner want the beach.
Have Momentum and Accountability.
Once you've gotten past these roadblocks to success it's time to gain momentum. Set benchmarks and goals, reach them and set new ones. Be accountable to the tasks and time-lines at hand. Don't let setbacks set you back.
Learn from each one and get back on the path. Remember that in every mistake there is a new learning moment. The only wrong turn you can truly call a mistake is one that you choose to not learn from.
Surround yourself with the right people in both your personal and professional life. Look at who's there.
- Are they people that you would like to be?
- Do they offer support when you need it and step back when you don't?
- Do they lend their opinions, expertise and suggestions in a positive way?
- Can you count on them?
Make changes if you need to. Remove people that don't support you from your inner circle. While this action may not be easy, life will be easier once you've done this.
Continue to change your circumstances until the answers to all of these questions work for you. Know that you alone know what is right for you and where you truly belong in this world.
Consider what else will give you momentum and accountability.
