In owning a company, liability is a large concern, and arguably the chief concern. Some may argue that profit is, but many years of profits can be wiped away in one case of exposure to liability; just ask McDonalds about their twenty five million dollar cup of coffee. The fear of the exposure of liability can drive a business owner to distraction, and that fear is multiplied, and too often realized, by owners of fleet-oriented businesses. If you are one of these owners, you know better than anyone the truth of that statement.
If this is true, that liability is this large of a threat (and especially to the small to mid-sized business owner-who among us has the deep pockets of McDonald's to answer a personal injury suit like that?), it seems to follow that a logical question would be "How can I reduce my liability in my day to day operations?". An excellent start in achieving this is to hire outside companies to do recurring tasks.
For instance, if you have a couple of your employees cut the grass at your shop, just to cut costs, and they hit a rock and break a window, who pays? You do, or your business does; it has assumed that liability. Outsource that same work to a reputable company, and not
only is the work done better-giving you a better appearance to the passing potential clients-but you also have a layer of protection. Amplify this scenario by that same rock flying out into traffic and hitting a high occupancy vehicle, and you can see how quickly one incident of liability exposure can spiral out of control.
Many outsiders may consider the idea of owning your own small business as being part and parcel of "the American Dream", and the paramount of achievement in their lives, but the actual owners of small to mid-sized businesses know the reality of the day to day grind and tremendous energy it takes to keep that business profitable, and especially in economic times like these. That is one more reason to look to reduce the possibility that some outside force or occurrence beyond your control could sneak in and undo everything you have worked to achieve for so many years.
In this vein, something as seemingly trivial as hiring a fleet maintenance company or a mobile maintenance company makes perfect sense; in one decision, you remove the tremendous weight of constant, nagging concern over your companies liabilities for your vehicles' maintenance, and improve the overall efficiency of your business by letting professionals do what they are trained to do. Some decisions are hard; this one is not.
