A simple process of walking puts 1.5 times your body weight onto your one foot. Running has been proven to put up to 3 times your entire body weight onto each inch of your foot. The foot is a complex structure which is used to support and balance the entire body. As such it is very important that you are able to keep your feet as healthy as possible. This is where foot orthotics comes in.

When you have foot pain, this is certainly something you should never ignore. The pain can lead to serious problems with different parts of the entire body such as the hips your knees and your back. These sorts of problems can be serious, and can lead to crippling effects on your entire life. if you feel pain in the foot, foot orthotics (shoe insoles) can be used to help.

These will be prescribed to do certain things and carry out certain functions. They will be used to reduce pain, provide support, prevent or slow down the deformity of the foot, provide better positioning of the feet and generally improve the entire functioning of the body.

Wearing shoe insoles will allow you to function at the highest possible level that can be achieved. Pain will be decreased, and your overall posture and the shaping of your foot will be far improved. Any sort of imbalance in your body will cause your feet to overcompensate in certain ways, and this can cause serious

fatigue and pain. Orthotics are there to completely negate this issue.

So how exactly are you supposed to know whether you will need these orthotics or not? Stats that we have been provided with have shown that between 70 and 85% of everyone will have certain biomechanical issues and imperfections with the way that they move. This is not to say that everyone who is not in the top 15 to 30% will require orthotic treatment, however there are lots of people who will.

For the most part, people will commonly forget a problem and will ignore it to their detriment. As listed above, lots of problems can be associated with this level of ignorance, and if you do find any issues or pain in your feet as a result of any sort of activity, then it is very important that you seek advice immediately from your doctor in order to find out whether you will be requiring foot orthotics as part of your treatment plan.

So will orthotics help to improve performance? This is of course the million dollar question and the truth is that additional research is required on functional devices that will be able to provide significant levels of help. The theory states that anything that improves the biomechanical functioning of the body will therefore help someone to become a better and more competent runner, yet there is no significant evidence as of yet that this will allow you to run faster or longer.
