It's a normal occurrence for a person's face to become weathered and have loose skin over time. This is a result of aging, sun exposure, stress, and the pull of gravity. A facelift can give one back their youthful appearance by tightening up the sagging and loose skin in the facial area.

It is not the correct procedure for every facial problem, however. Some cosmetic issues would be better addressed by another procedure. The best candidates for a facelift have the following attributes:

* Saggy lower portion of the face: The problem areas that are best remedied by a facelift lie in the lower seventy-five percent of the face. Loose jowls, undefined jawline and sagging cheeks can be alleviated by this procedure but other issues cannot. If the major drooping areas are around the eyes and forehead, the patient would be better served by a brow lift. If the neck area has the most redundant skin, a neck lift would be a preferable procedure.

* Wrinkled skin is not the main problem: Folds and droopiness will be eased, but wrinkles are not adequately alleviated by the facelift. If wrinkles are the main culprit, laser treatments or a chemical peel may be the better option.

* Age between forty and seventy years of

age: The ideal candidate is between the ages of forty and seventy years old. For patients who are not ready for a full facelift, there are mini-versions that may be more appropriate for younger skin that has not experienced as much aging.

* In good health: The most successful outcomes are achieved by patients who are in good health. Nutritious diet, adequate exercise, no unresolved disease issues.

* Non-smokers: Cigarette smoking impairs the healing response. It is imperative to quit smoking several weeks before an elective surgical procedure.

* Realistic expectations: It is a good idea to scan a multitude of "before and after" photos both online and in the surgeon's office in order to get a realistic idea of what sort of outcome may be expected. "Before and after" photos are also an excellent communication tool in discussing expectations with the plastic surgeon.

A facelift takes from three to five hours to perform and usually requires an overnight hospital stay. There will be bruising and swelling for several weeks as well as initial feelings of tightness and some reddening of the area. Enough healing should occur within two to four weeks for the patient to return to work. It is important to apply sunscreen for at least one year or longer.
